The Perks of Power

Free private jet, a personal chef... these sort of management perks need to be investigated and possibly prosecuted.

  1. Gil - What a dumd a** comparison. Lets see if Obama takes as much vacation time as Bush.

  2. Read the article.

We're told the president's job is 24/7. And they weren't changed by an Obama presidential order. Bush, as president, kept the same supposed hours.

And the same is true of any CEO, even when they're on vacation.

Washington's "Perks for me but not for thee," hypocrisy is hilarious.

  3. Gil - Our troops barely make a living wage, but we spend a million per soldier training them and don't charge them for transportation when we ship them overseas. Do you call those "perks".
Besides, with Obama vs Bush, we are now getting a lot more value for our dollar.

  4. Gil - I read it. You can make all of the excuses you want. The fact remains that Bush spent at least one third, if not more, of his presidency at Camp David or Crawford - on vacation. Where do you think he came up with the time to read 2987 books. Reagan was bad, Bush was worse. He holds the record. Now if we include the mental vacations that he took, we would be looking at 99% vacation time. Come to think of it, you're on vacation alot too.

  5. Bob,

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
You sure seem to find a lot of time to surf the net while "doing" YOUR job.

You'd be smarter NOT to go there!

  6. Bob,
It's amazing how lazy and dumb President Bush was and yet he still managed to properly choose Cabinet members who paid their lawful taxes.
The only increased value we're getting from Obama is all his failed nominees paying the back taxes they've so far evaded.
Has any new President ever had a worse start than this?

  7. Jake - Bush's cabinet choices were not vetted as thoroughly to find their tax problems. Mid-campaign McCain was revealed to be delinquent on back taxes for his San Diego condo.

  8. Gee Gil. I didn't know you kept tabs on what shifts I work, and when I work them.
Who appointed you big brother? If it wasn't for me, this blog would be so one sided, it would tip over and fall into the Darby Creek, and Carter would be the only survivor, because, as we all know, he can walk on water. But hey, Im sorry you took the vacation comment personal. It was meant as a joke. And speaking of jokes, lets get back to Bush and vacations. So Rove claims Bush read 95 books in his last year in office. Unless he's Evelyn Wood, thats a pretty time consuming venture, wouldn't you say? If the job is 24/7, were we paying George to read books? But then I could look at it from another perspective. All of that time he was reading books, may have kept him from poking his stick into another hornets nest.

  9. I agree with you jake. The honeymoon is almost over and we're not even a month in. Obama's (and all his followers) world will soon come crashing down on them. They should have went with Hillary.

  10. "Gee Gil. I didn't know you kept tabs on what shifts I work, and when I work them."

Bob, I don't. And you should be glad your bosses don't either.

As I suggested. It's best not to GO THERE!

  11. this is nonsense. vacations by a president are never so. Having staffs and aides and wireless capabilities, the President of the United States is the original telecommuter.

We're going to hear as much about Obama playing in pick-up basketball games as we have with W reading books. And neither matter to me. Just as we shouldn't care when Governor Rendell appears on "Eagles Post Game Live" and Arlen Spector plays squash every day.

I wouldn't drown in the Darby Creek because I also have a boat - the "KNOT GUILTY" down there - I am sure you knew that. Even Obama when on vacation will be hounded 24/7 with the daily briefings and other tasks. I am wondering though why Obama needed to get out of the White House to read to school kids this week. He has only been on the job for a couple of weeks and he is showing signs of fatigue. Wasn't there a former president who was ridiculed for reading a story to kids? Life is wonderful when you live in a glass house.

  13. Gil - Was that a threat?

  14. Geez, Bob, now who's being sensitive?

Threat? Of course not. I'm glad you check in here and contribute your comments. And I don't care on whose time you do it.

I'm just saying, making cracks about other people's work ethic, invites a crack back.

Whether at Camp David on in Crawford, Bush was president 24/7. Obama will be too.

But the post was about the sort of perks, Democrats frequently criticize private-sector CEOs, even to the point of criminalizing them.

You call it a dumb a** comparison. Not exactly on point. You can do better than that.

  15. Fair enough. I thought you were taking this to seriously, and obviously you thought I was. Sorry for any misunderstanding. Next round is on me.

  16. Carter - You should call your boat the "Nut Guilty". I think it's cute that you take your bathtub toys to Darby Creek.

  17. Carter - Are you dense? I guess I have to spell it out for you. These are your words "If you agree, which would be an obvious affront to Diano, I will never call you Baaahb again. Promise." Well, I did agree, and yet you continue to call to me "Baaahb." Concentrate. Focus. This isn't that difficult Carter.

  18. Bob,(and Weave?)
You said "Bush's Cabinet Choices were not vetted as thoroughly to find their tax problems". Are you kidding? Of course they were. Name one Cabinet member in eight years whose Federal tax problems came out subsequently.
The Dems cannot excuse away perhaps the worst week a new president has ever suffered.
We were told we would see more intelligence and a better quality of government when Obama took over. We haven't.
Instead, we've seen inexperience and double standards, along with hysterical hyperbole to justify an astounding increase in governmental spending.

  19. Jake - That wasn't my post, There are two people posting under the name Bob right now. I was critical of Obamas choice of tax cheats. Obama was at least man enough to admit it was a mistake, and shoulder the blame, while our exiting President blames everyone else for his failed presidency. However, if you think Obama is off to a bad start, read todays Times editorial. The paper that Gil writes for disagrees with you. So do I.

  20. Bob-
Sorry to step on your toes. I thought there were a lot of Bob's here that thought alike, and it didn't make a difference.
I could try spelling my name backwards to distinguish us. :-)

  21. Gil - The money Q (I got that from you) "It might be a bit of a stretch to compare today's corporate titans". I read the story, and I agreed with him. I called it a dumb a** comparison. I'm wrong for doing that?
The story also talks about presdidential vacation time, so I decided to research that. Turns out that Bush was # 1 at something. You said -"Whether at Camp David on in Crawford, Bush was president 24/7. Obama will be too." So what? A parent is a parent 24/7. Does that mean they are actively parenting 24/7? No president goes the entire four yrs. without taking breaks. Without letting others keep an eye on things. Are they working when they sleep? Of course not. Some presidents will be more involved than others. I would suggest that Clinton was a much more involved president than Bush. A more intellectually involved president. I believe that Clinton spent more time at his desk (and under his desk)getting things done, than Bush. Do you remember reading about Rice asking people to keep written reports brief, because president Bush doesn't like to read detailed reports? In the early days of his presidency he even told Brit Hume that he doesnt like to read newspapers because they contain "opinions". I know you will disagree with me, but I believe that Bush was in way over his head as president, and he used his vacation time to escape the pressure of a job that he wasnt up to. Now of course, now there's a push to remake the Bush image. Sorry, but I'm not buying into it.

  22. Bob - No need to. We're pretty much in agreement.
    Keep em guessing.

  23. Bob,
Did you see that Obama is heading to Camp David with the family this weekend? That didn't take long.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Gil - Yea. I did see that. I accused him of reading your blog.
He promised me he'd be back in the Oval office first thing Monday morning.

  25. Carter - A boat on Darby Creek!
Now THATS impressive! You've discovered another way to p*** away your money! Wait, let me guess. You bought it just in case theres a really really BIG flood, and you have to start gathereing the animals two by two.
Gender check those critters. Don't want any gay stuff happening on the "Nut Guilty"
