Death in Darby
My print column on the recent violence in Darby Borough is up.
UPDATE: Borough Police Chief Bobby Smythe told me minutes ago that they still don't have any conclusive leads in the case. But that this morning a citizen who would prefer to remain anonymous read the column and has offered an additional $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Ollie Cloyd's killers.
That brings the total to $2,000.
"Let that (reward) number go up more another $1,000 or $2,000," Smythe said, "and that will be the end of everybody's closed mouth."

Don't snitch---I am sure that some of the people in Darby, moved from Philadelphia because of crime but instead of leaving it in Philadelphia they brought it with them. They will eventually move again to avoid the hazards and dangerous of crime but will instead take it to another safe neighborhood. It is a vicious circle. I am sure they they are wondering why crimes fllows them? Of course Don't snitch has nothing to do with the crime problem. Oh yea! Keep building up the reward and watch how don't snitch goes out the window, this gives you a general idea of the low life that we are dealing with. No snitching is nothing more than being a participant of the crime after the fact and if proof can be provided thay should be charged so

Can someone in DELCO please consider getting some update equipment in the Lima crime lab. I know that their is a backlog that stems back at least two years. I believe that this can be a hughe tool in addressing the unsolved homocide cases throughout DELCO. The case of the 84 year old lady that was solved, however, the Philadelphia crime lab processed the case and as a result the case is currently solved.
the stop snitching mentally is just like the whistleblowing mentally and every system protects itself even though it kills people one way or another. Trying to address the issue of forensics in DELCO is like pulling teeth and know one wants to address it. USE FORENSICS and you will find that if a persons DNA is at the scene then you may get information that would not be provided.

Gun ownership is a right and we all know it is subject to reasonable (whatever that means) regulation.
None of these youngsters were old enough to even own a handgun, and unless they had a license, not allowed to carry it concealed. Also, it was against the law to shoot that boy and kill him, yet that is what they did.
It is sad that kids these days have to resort to guns, knives, or other instruments that they will use to kill, but the sadder fact is that they do kill, regardless of the consequences.
For the VAST majority of us who obey the law, this type of violence is exactly the reason why we need to be armed to protect ourselves. I hope you get that as once again the police weren't there to protect that young boy. I also hope you know that the dead boy's family has no recourse against the police for failing to protect their son.
The shooters deserve to rot in jail!

Scott, are you saying that you disagree with Smythes statment about gun access? Do we know the age of the shooters? Do we know where they got their guns? You say they should rot in jail. Rot in jail? This was a cold blooded murder. I wouldn't have a problem with the death penalty.
Scott, from what I've been able to find, the legal age to possess a firearm in Pa. is 18, and can be younger with a parents permission.

It is illegal for anyone under 21 to puchase a handgun; it is illegal for anyone under 21 to carry a handgun; it is illegal to carry a handgun without a license; it is illegal to possess a handgun with a serial number obliterated (assumption that it was/is); it is illegal to fire a weapon at a person unless justified; and it is certainly illegal to kill someone.
My first question to you is, which is more at fault for this boy's death, the firearm, or the killers?
Second question: How could gun control have prevented this intentional killing?
Third question: Why didn't Smythe's police department protect this young man?

Scott - You ask "How could gun control have prevented this intentional killing?" You should pose that question to Smythe. He's the one who siad easy access to guns and violent TV shows contribute to this culture of violence. I would tend to think that Smythe is an expert in this field. Wouldn't you?
Your other two questions are just ridiculous.
My question to you. How do you know that all of the culprits are under 21? Is it possible that some of their weaponry was bought right over the counter?
