F. Gilman Spencer III, R.I.P.

My father passed away this morning in New York City after a brief illness. He died peacefully and painlessly, surrounded by his family.

Because at one time he was a rather famous newspaper editor here in New York, I just got a call from Bill Grimes of the New York Times.

He said he had talked to a good number of people worked with my dad at various newspapers over his 50-year career in the business.

"Boy," Grimes said. "He sure was beloved."

He sure was.

We are sad beyond words.

UPDATE: More here here and here.

UPDATE II: Here is the NY Times story.

I never met your dad, but I can tell by others and what was written that he was the real deal! He seemed to be quite a mans man and great reporter.

I am so sorry for your loss!

Gil, Sorry to hear about your dad's passing. When I came to Philadelphia in '85 he was just leaving the Daily News but his legacy was apparent, particularly the incredible slate of columnists - Dexter, Stone, Schulian, Mullen, etc. During my brief stint as a journalist in SW VA, my sports editor wrote incredibly catchy headlines and columns that I later found out where influenced by the Philly D-News, which he had delivered to his door step. As his roomate I began reading and thought it was an incredible newspaper. Hope all is well optherwise.

I have lost respect for most journalists - but you are one whom I respect and admire for getting to the meat of a story, having the brains and independence to stay with the facts and not being afraid to tell it like it is. I met your Dad years ago and he was a great role model for your career. Please accept my sympathies for your loss.
