Larry The Bigot
When he is not convicting the Sanford Police of incompetence and George Zimmerman of homicide, MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell shows off his fashionable bigotry towards Mormons.
Has nothing to do with the fact that the main Republican contender for president is a Mormon, does it?
Kudos to former Main Line Times editor Kevin Williamson for calling him on it.
UPDATE: Bob Somerby at The Daily Howler has also noticed O'Donnell's ugly playing of the Mormon card and he promises to weigh in about it soon.

Gil - Williamson writes "Wikipedia informs us that Lawrence O’Donnell has half as many ex-wives as Newt Gingrich." So....that would one?
I think Williamson misssed the point of 'Donnell's rant.

Gil - Did you watch the video? He was calling Romney on the carpet for accusing Obama of being a man trying to create a new religion called "secularism", and in so doing, he pointed out issues with the religion of the man who was doing the accusing. Williamson would have you believe that O'Donnell's statement was an outright attack on Mormonism for the sake of attacking Mormonism. I went back and read Williamson's article a second time. Not once does he mention the context in which O'Donnell was talking about the origins of Mormonism. Now personally I think of all religion as being invented, and if what O'Donnell say's is true, I give Joseph Smith credit for being one hell of a creative guy. But 48 wives? I'm not so sure it would be worth it.

Yes, I watched the video. And if you don't think O'Donnell's remarks weren't meant to disparage Mormons and Mormonism, I can't help you.
But someone should ask Harry Reid about O'Donnell's remarks.
This is classic example of liberal-left religious bigotry. Usually they save it for evangelical Christians. But when the leading GOP candidate for president is a Mormon, as Babe's owner said, "That'll do, pig. That'll do."
Gil - No doubt O'Donnell is a grand stander, cut from the same cloth as Olberman. I'll give you that. My point is that Williamson's article falls short because, by omission, it misrepresents the direction that these remarks were coming from. These remarks may appear bigoted, but are these remarks any more bigoted than Romneys insinuations that Obama might be secular? If Romney is using Obama's secular leanings to strike fear in the hearts of Christians, isn't that also a form of bigotry?

Gil - Maybe so. O'Donnell spews venom. But then he's not running for office. He's putting on a show not unlike that of Glenn Beck. But do you deny that Romney is accusing Obama of being secular in an attempt to frighten Christian voters?
Gil - So I ask you, what's worse. A talk show host exploiting a candidates religion, or another candidate exploiting a candidates religion? I haven't yet heard Obama criticize Romney for being a Mormon, but I have heard Romney criticize Obama for being secular.
No matter your religion, it's pretty "secular" to mandate the Catholic church pay for contraception and abortion against their will.
Most Americans agree that the Administration is wrong to force good Christians to violate their religious convictions. And there is no great consensus that contraceptives even qualify as health care.
This is a fight that Obama picked, apparently to satisfy his heathen liberal base. I suspect it will be viewed as another serious error in judgment.

Jake - Bottom line here is that Romney's problem with religion isn't going to be with liberals and Dems. It's going to be convincing Christian conservatives that Mormonism isn't some sort of cult. Franlin Graham isn't sure Romneys a Christian. Maybe he should start there.

The election is going to be about leadership and Mitt is a significantly more accomplished leader than Obama.
The fact that he is a religious man, no matter the religion, will only add to his appeal.
Obama is going to have to run on his record and that's a heavy burden to bear.
Jake - I believe this election should be based on ability, not religion. I think we agree on that. Now if I search the archives am I going to find anti Romney comments from Jake?
What's actually there and what you think is there don't always coincide.
I've cast a critical eye on all the potential candidates from the beginning, but have enjoyed knowing all are better choices than Obama.
Mitt is an accomplished guy, probably the most qualified individual to run for President in our lifetime. It's fortunate he will be the candidate because Obama has made a big mess to clean up.
In the beginning Bob once again attempts to divert the focus from the content of the Spencerblog post to something totally irrelevant to the content of the Spencerblog post. It must be an acquired habit to do so. In the end he finds it necessary to again divert the focus. But in the middle too. Maybe somehow, someday, someway the comments to a Spencerblog by Bob will stay on point without the diversions that would be an embarrassment to even the Spinmeiters Jay Carney or Robert Gibbs.

You're right. A post about the bigoted liberal media is morphed by Bob into a discussion of Mitt's credentials.
But fortunately for us, Mitt's chief executive resume compared to the community activist in the White House is a story that is well worth telling.
