Using Bin Laden

The Seals aren't happy to be used for political purposes.

UPDATE: Former Attorney General Michael Mukasey writes:
The first anniversary of the SEAL Team 6 operation that killed Osama bin Laden brings the news that President Obama plans during the coming campaign to exploit the bragging rights to the achievement. That plan invites scrutiny that is unlikely to benefit him.
Consider the events surrounding the operation. A recently disclosed memorandum from then-CIA Director Leon Panetta shows that the president's celebrated derring-do in authorizing the operation included a responsibility-escape clause: "The timing, operational decision making and control are in Admiral McRaven's hands. The approval is provided on the risk profile presented to the President. Any additional risks are to be brought back to the President for his consideration. The direction is to go in and get bin Laden and if he is not there, to get out."
Which is to say, if the mission went wrong, the fault would be Adm. McRaven's, not the president's.

Read it all here.

This isn't classy. This isn't classy, at all.

UPDATE II: Former CIA man Jose Rodriquez argues the Obama Team is no Seal Team.
As we mark the anniversary of Osama bin Laden’s death, President Obama deserves credit for making the right choice on taking out Public Enemy No. 1.
But his administration never would have had the opportunity to do the right thing had it not been for some extraordinary work during the George W. Bush administration. Much of that work has been denigrated by Obama as unproductive and contrary to American principle.
He is wrong on both counts.

  1. A lot of Veterans don't like this boasting either! Heroes don't brag!

  2. So it's okay for the Republicans to bash Obama using whatever incidents happened under his presidency BUT it's not okay for Obama to use the fact he got Osama during his presidency? Sounds a little hypocritical to me. Seal Team Six may not like it, but too bad. You work for the government and your boss is going to use it to help win another term.

  3. "Obama to use the fact "he got" Osama during his presidency"!!

    You wrote above..
Did you mean to say that the SEAL team got Osama while Obama was in charge? That I can buy!

Obama didn't get anyone, he wasn't there.

  4. As a veteran, Anonymous, I take great offense in your last two sentences. I guess you weren't alive during the Viet Nam "conflict". I lost a number of people very close to me because "their boss" was using them to help win another term. Since I spent a year of my life in the so-called conflict, I could have been one of them. Like Danny, I firmly believe Seal Team Six is very justified in their distaste for Obama claiming "he" got Bin Laden. Look up to the first comment. Danny is correct. Heroes don't brag.

  5. Correct, Danny. Charlie thank you for your service. Glad you made it home. We all know that there was not an interview from any soldier from Team Six. They go in, do their job, then get out. No crying over who gets credit because they know they are the best attack squad in the world. Anyway, isn't it against regs for anyone in the military to question any action President? The spin doctors at work, including me. Mission Accomplished. By the way all politicos are creeps looking for credit. See Delta post above.

  8. Obama put his presidency on the line. Remember what happened to Carter. He deserves credit for his actions. Members of the Seal Team involved have not been critical of the President. Ryan Zinke, a former Commander in the US Navy was the critic.

Mr Zinke, is now a Republican state senator in Montana.

    Big surprise.
    Suck it up.

  9. His Presidency on the line? Are you kidding me? I am sure they polled the masses and found out that a huge percentage wanted Osama dead.

Let's talk Fast and Furious, Solyndra, Obamacare and the other missteps of this administration? NOPE, he is a big deal because he followed through on an order that President Bush gave? You are delusional!

  10. OBAMA 2012! Getting it done!

  11. When Bush FIRST went into Iraq and MOST of this country was behind him, the right said things like "Bush is getting it done" & "Bush is going after the evil-doers". Maybe if Bush hadn't attacked THE WRONG COUNTRY he would have gotten Osama. Unfortunately, Bush went into Iraq for their phantom WMD's. Now that Obama got it done and got rid of Osama, it's suddenly not okay to say "Obama got Osama." Hippocrates all over the place. OBAMA 2012

  12. Mitt said it right. The authorization to get Osama was such a no-brainer, that even Jimmy Carter couldn't have screwed it up.
The President's husband should pull up his mom jeans and act like he's got half the guts of these Navy Seals.

  14. Jake, name one President who ever bad mouthed the Navy Seals and I will kiss your ass in Gimbels window

  15. Rdub
    Let me Bob a response.
Checking the archives, there is no accusation of any President bad-mouthing the Navy Seals.

Is Obama trying to equate his easy authorization of the mission into some action equivalent to the genuine courage of the Seals? Unfortunately, he is, and that speaks to both a lack of understanding and a lack of character.

You may now kiss my ass in Gimbel's window. Oh wait, you had a convenient fallback position... Gimbels is out of business.

  16. It's tough for the right to accept that Obama did something amazing. No matter how bad you think Obama is just remember...HE'S STILL BETTER THAN BUSH WAS.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Amazing? Really?

What the Seals do is amazing. Allowing them to do it and then sitting 13,000 away and watching, then taking credit for it, is something less.

  18. It kills conservatives that Obama is going to win another term. I love it. Keep blaming Obama for what Bush did. Bush=worse than Carter

  19. Conservatives were devastated when they heard the news that Obama got Bin Laden. Obama = 4 more years.

  20. Unfortunately Anon, your dear Obama cannot escape the miserable economy he's presided over.
And the Republicans have come together behind probably the most qualified candidate to run for President in our lifetime.
So Obama can beat his chest all he wants over Osama, his financial incompetence is the deal-breaker with most reasonable voters.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yeah...because Bush left such a GREAT economy for Obama. All of our woes can be directly attributed to Bush's unnecessary war in Iraq. Romney has no shot on election day; I don't care what the polls say. He still has to chose a running mate and as we all know, the running mate is what lost the election for McCain in '08. The moderates are who's going to elect this president and Romney has no shot w/ them.

  22. Anon is full of crap. Bin Laden is still alive. You can find this on the innernet. This was staged by Obama to win votes because he is a liar. Bin Laden is in Yemen or Pakistan. If Bush didnt get him now way Obama can so he made it up to look tuff. Besides he would not kill a fellow muslim.
