Buzz Bissinger and Me: Part II

The meeting I had scheduled tonight with Buzz Bissinger is off. I was notified of this in a two-page  letter from an attorney named Paul Lauricella.

"Kindly note that I represent Mr. Bissinger in connection with your column of July 29, 2012. Please direct any further inquiries to my attention."

In his letter, Mr. Lauricella accuses me all manner of journalistic malfeasance and demanded a retraction of my original column claiming that it "unnecessarily subjected" Mr. Bissinger to "undeserved ridicule" and "unwarranted attacks."

And he wrote this:
"You have compounded your initial lapse in journalistic integrity by baiting Mr. Bissinger, responding to his requests to remove the column with unprofessional mockery, and by demanding that he respond to criticism that were not even justified in the first place. For that reason, Mr. Bissinger will not be attending the meeting that had been arranged for this evening, as it is clear to me that your goal is to simply self-servingly trade upon his good name and needlessly malign him. As far as I am concerned, Mr. Bissinger should not be forced to "respond" to a controversy that you have invented."
Unprofessional mockery? Has Mr. Lauricella ever listened to Mr. Bissinger's radio show?

Mr. Lauricella, of course, made no mention of the fact that it was Mr. Bissinger who failed to respond to two emails and one phone call from me asking him if he knew anything about the Ward case before the column ran. Furthermore, Mr. Lauricella ascribes to me conclusions about Bissinger's actions, I did not come to, that I did not write, and that make no logical sense.

Mr. Lauricella also made no mention of the three Sunday morning phone calls I got from Mr. Bissinger, all profanity-laced diatribes and overhead by two witnesses.

Mr. Lauricella writes that Mr. Bissinger is considering his "legal options."

Aren't we all?

  1. When you're right, fight. When you're wrong, hire a lawyer... It will be interesting to see how long Bissinger and his attorney are willing to carry this out. But with Bissinger now being a radio celebrity with lots of big bucks it is pretty evident that his attorney will stick with him as long as Bissinger is willing to fight a losing battle.

  2. Gil,
Like the Freeh Report, this shyster thinks he knew what you were thinking and believes you should have done more. The truth be damned, you are convicted.

As a consequence, you are banned from golfing in Las Vegas for the next four years, will have the last two years of your columns removed from the archives, and you must buy 2 rounds of drinks at the Pen and Pencil Club for the next 5 Saturday nights.

There has to be punishment for this culture of Gil that has so victimized the innocent Buzz.

  3. Wait a minute, Jake... Two years of columns removed? Check. Buying 2 rounds of drinks at the Club? Check. But no way does the punishment fit the crime that Gil is banned from golfing in Las Vegas for the next four years. That is what the Supreme Court would call "cruel and inhumane punishment". Whoops, maybe Bissinger and his mouthpiece will fight for that as the ultimate punishment for challenging the Buzz.

  4. Your column fairly challenges his journalistic integrity in asking why one story would garner his attention and another similar story on the same subject would not. One of those stories happens to have occurred at his alma mater...the other at mine. The fact that he is getting harassed is not due to your article making any kind of accusations of him...rather pointing out the selective nature of journalism in this case. That he has been so vocal in condemnation of a University culture at Penn State has opened him up to such critique.

  5. Concern yourself with something that is important. I hear the middle class is in trouble because of corporate greed. It has been going on for about thirty five years. This is all "bread and circuses", a distraction to reality that you and your bloggers are consumed by. How about mentioning a family in Delaware County that has been decimated by corporate greed and has subsequent]y fallen apart.
The results are human misery. This dispute between you and Bissinger is all about yor egos.

  6. Still trying to figure out why he hired a medical malpractice lawyer in this scenario though...

  7. Yes you subjected him to ridicule. Whether it is unwarranted is a different story.

When a noted author uses his preeminence to comment it is more than fair to place his comments in perspective. That he did not know about a similar course of conduct at his alma mater is a fair comparison to demonstrate that his comments about Penn State are far too strident and dogmatic.
