Amtrak lost $84 million on its food service alone last year. Over the last decade it has lost more than $800 million on food and sodas.
The head of the government subsidized rail service testified before Congress that the food service losses are moving in the right direction.
Q: But how do you lose money selling hamburgers and Cokes to a captive ridership?
A: Let government do it. It'll find a way.
Yea, but they're really good burgers. And they serve them with Grey Poupon.
ReplyDeleteI never take the train, I am not allowed to carry my gun on Amtrak.
ReplyDeleteBut I do love Septa!!
Thank you Bernie Goetz
ReplyDeleteLet us not forget that the Godfather of Amtrak is our esteemed Vice President Joe Biden... I suspect he does not relate to a loss of $84 million last year, $800 million in the last decade, since he doesn't relate to anything real. Just another drop in the bucket to Good Old Boy Joe. Because it's merely OPM and, therefore, it doesn't mean much to him. Plus these figures make the rent the American taxpayers pay via the Secret Service for the outhouse at his Greenville, DE compund seems like chump change...
ReplyDeleteMy hero on the number 2 train!!
ReplyDeleteI was talking to one of our union legistative reps, and he told me that Amtrak had considered privatizing the food services, but Republicans insisted that any contracts awarded would come with the provision that if the service lost money, the government would make up the difference.
