Facts is how we continue to win. Prof. Lott is just one example of the truth!
Unfortunately, Danny, the facts aren't what the facts are, the facts are what people perceive them to be... And those who don't accept the facts will continue to deny them.
On almost every issue, I’m very liberal. When it comes to the 2nd Amendment, I have some very mixed views.
In general, there I don’t perceive a problem with folks owning hunting weapons, handguns, or other semi-automatic rifle type weapons for personal protection. I think there is nothing wrong for a person of sound mind and clean criminal background both owning a gun and having a permit to carry concealed. I’m also for giving full faith and credit to those permits when they are obtained in states that have processes that are at least as rigorous as PA’s.
I would support some small tweaks in gun laws.
- I don’t think that anybody needs to own a drum that can hold 100 rounds. One should not need 100 rounds loaded into any weapon in order to be protected.
- I have no problem giving up my Social Security number when applying for all manner of things, so it should be an automatic for a gun purchase as well. Allowing people to circumvent this for one on one sales as part of the “gun show exemption” is needless. Transferring gun ownership via a background check could follow a slightly more advanced version of signing over the title on a car in a private sale.
- The “girlfriends” of criminals and drug dealers who buy gun 12 at a time for those criminals and drug dealers is sickening. Limiting firearm purchases to one per month would still allow a person to obtain more than enough firearms for personal protection in any given year. In 6 months one could own a .22, 9mm, .357, .40, .44, and .50.
- PA should not allow permits obtained in states with weak processes, like Florida, to be honored in our state. Obtaining a PA permit to carry concealed is something that I’ve helped several friends obtain without issue. I don’t want criminal sneaks using Florida to get a gun they don’t have a right to carry concealed.
I have no problem with law abiding citizens owning guns. I support it. I'm not surprised at the results of this survey. However, after researching this survey, and several others from different years, I've noticed that the survey fails to ask questions about assault weapons. I find the lack of such an important question to be suspect. The writer also fails to mention that when asked if a national style carry permit would reduce crime, only 50% said yes. Police Chief Timmony complained that use of assault weapons in Florida violent criminal activity went from 4% before the assault weapons ban was lifted, to 21% after. I went on to find a recomendation from the International Police Chiefs Assoc. regarding assault weapons. Here it is - "Limit the manufacture and sale of automatic and semi-automatic assault-type firearms. The deadly flow of military assault-type automatic and semi-automatic weapons onto U.S. streets and into the hands of violent criminals means that all too frequently the superior firepower belongs to the criminals, not law enforcement. These weapons have no sporting and/or hunting purpose. Rather, they are used by those who desire "ultimate firepower" in order to quickly kill or seriously wound large groups of persons. Manufacture and sale of assault weapons to the general public should be prohibited. Federal legislation to this effect is needed immediately."

If I want to use a 100 round drum to shoot from my rifle for shooting cans at a quarry, why should I not be able to? I mean it's just a box with a spring in it. I could make my own easily.
Social Security? The gun show fear is for long guns only, not pistols.
One gun a month misses the fact that when I want to sell all my guns, I can't. If I want to buy a matched set, I can't. (You are not into collecting?) Just prosecute the hell out of Straw buyers. 2 years in with the law in Philly and not ONE prosecution, Mike. Not one. Use the laws already on the books.
The PA License(It's not a permit)should be recognized in all 50 states and territories like my drivers license. As it is now, I have a Utah, Florida and PA license to get reciprocity in 40 States. Utah license allows me to carry in Delaware, Mike. See how dumb the gun laws are??
My answer is prosecute the criminals, don't ever drop gun charges or trade them out in plea bargain, allow full reciprocity, stop gun free zones. I also would preach education.
Assault weapon?? See the issue is with the term, Bob. When I was in the service I carried a M-16 rifle. It was fully automatic and would tear through a 30 round magazine in about one trigger pull. Great for laying down suppressing fire, but very inaccurate. Also, you would zp through magazines every 15 seconds and who wants to carry a ton of those, right?
In today rifle world we have Military STYLE rifles. They are black like the M-16, they have the look of the M-16, but they ain't a M-16. (if you put racing stripes and a hood scoop on a car, does it make it faster? NO)It looks cooler, but it ain't.
So what has been listed as an assault weapon is a simple semi automatic rifle. Made in the same way as a semi automatic pistol, pull the trigger once and 1 round get's fired.
My South Carolina hunting rifle I use for feral hogs is semi auto, it has traditional wood butt stock and hunting scope and shoots with one trigger pull for one round EXACTLY like the assault weapons you are scared of.
What I find is education is the best medicine. I need to get you and Mike to the range someday.
Danny - I may not be as well versed in the field of weaponry as you are, but I'm sure the police chiefs who made these recommendation at the International Police Chiefs Summit are.
The key word in your statement there is "International" Police Chiefs.
The 2nd amendment is an United States right. So Egypt, Iraq, most of Europe and all of Asia would not be a fair count, would it?
Well that explains it Danny. Police Chiefs in foreign nations wouldn't have a clue when it comes to assault weapons would they?

I thought you might understand that on a vote with NON Gun friendly NATIONS, that the vote might tend to go that way. But you missed my point completely.
I am only interested in people that understand and take an oath to uphold the 2nd amendment. People who do live outside of the United States have little to no gun freedoms.
Since you keep using the term assault weapon, what does that? I explained that it is a Military style weapon, but you keep insisting it to be something unknown to me. When I shoot mine, am I assaulting the paper target? If so, what am I doing when I shoot a revolver at targets?
If a sniper rifle has a bolt action and is black and ugly is that an assault weapon??
Danny - I'm not an expert on weapons, but I would venture to say that these police chiefs are.
My point being that the person who wrote the "more guns less crime" story was very selective in his choice of available reference material.
Therefore, never forget to check on the warranty period before finalizing a deal. WHAT? Yes, on your multipurpose Leatherman tool there is probably an extra can opener, if not, throw one in. The tester boasts intelligent data analysis PC software to track the battery decay trend and send an alarm in advance of problems. However, I have a meeting to attend to Thursday at 6:30 p.m., and I am hoping that this closure does not create a major obstacle for me to get to the meeting. Batteries may seem like an odd choice for a promotional item, but if you think about it, everybody needs them.
