Bringing a Hammer to Brain Surgery

Walter Russell Mead on the folly of Obamacare:
The law is a blunt instrument; fixing the health care system by government fiat is like neurosurgery with a hammer. It’s going to hurt more than you think, and will harm more than it helps. Let’s hope politicians figure that out before too much damage is done.

Neurosurgery with a hammer is easier to understand than Obamacare. Consider this: "WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Internal Revenue Service on Wednesday released final rules for a new tax on medical devices, products ranging from surgical sutures to knee replacement implants, that starts next year as part of President Barack Obama's 2010 healthcare law."
So the cost of all medical devices, etc. will increase by 2.3 percent. Which means that the (a) insurance companies, or (b) the uninsured consumer, or (c) the already stretched Medicare and Medicaid will have to bear the increased cost. So the Obamacare takes from one pocket and puts it into another pocket. But if you follow the impact through from the initial tax to the ultimate benefit you'll see very clearly that this is but one example that Obamacare does not reduce costs, it increases them. Thanks, Mr. President.
