Signing statements are, for now, a sadly bipartisan power grab for the executive branch. In addition to signing statements all one seems to need is unethical lawyers like John Yoo and Jay Bybee to claim "Commander in Chief" powers to torture people and conduct warrantless wiretapping. There isn't a lot of daylight, except torture, between Bush II and Obama when it comes to power grabs like signing statements and warrantless wiretapping.
