A Petty Purge in Media

Media Borough Council president and Democrat Frank Daly, asserting the prerogatives of his position, has decided to remove Republican Pete Alyanakian as head of the borough's Environmental Advisory Committee.

The comittee was Alyanakian's baby. He invented it and dreamed up most of the initiatives to put Media on the map as a Green town. How embarrassing that a Republican was the council's leader in environmental action. No longer.

Daly ran for Commonwealth Court judge in November and lost, thanks to the GOP machine. Maybe he's still irritable from the drubbing and taking it out on one of few Republicans in the county he has a bit of power over.

It all feels a bit petty and small.

Spencerblog thinks most of Media's green initiatives are feel-good measures that provide little in the way of real environmental benefit. (But there's nothing wrong with feeling good, as long as it doesn't cost too much.)

A few years back when Alyanakian floated a "no-smoking" trial baloon for the borough, I suggested that the borough's nickname would have to be changed to "Everybody's Hometown Nanny." He got off that kick in a hurry, but manfully took the crap for it in most every bar in town.

The EAC was Alyanakian's little rice bowl, and Daly broke it for no other reason, it appears, than small-town partisan pettiness. Media was supposed to be above that sort of thing. Guess not with Daly in charge.

I told you Daly was a vicious LibDem partisan unworthy of the bench. How could such a partisan possibly be trusted to judge others fairly?

Frank Daly is a weenie. Frank will find a tree hugger to take over, as we all know that Republicans care about nothing (or so the libs believe).

Gil - First, get your facts straight, you joke of a reporter. Frank Daly ran for Court of Common Pleas, not Commonwealth Court.

Second, Frank Daly is a good man, a good lawyer, and a good public official. Leave him alone, you bully.

Your accuracy is about as right on as your baseless opinions.

Good public officials do what is best for their town.

Losers who become public officials to exert power over other people weaken their community.

There seems to be a common misconception in politics that you become more powerful by beating other people down. History shows that iron fist politics is bad politics and while is may exist it is ineffective and detrimental to the population. The longer things are kept quiet, the longer they can stave off their inevitable failure, but as soon as things break in the press, the floodgates are opened.

Great article Gil! Right on...and not only did he take it away for no other reason than "it's his perogative" he gave it to his buddy Brian Hall, who is in charge of at least 4 other committees...how could he possibly do as good a job as Pete did???

Alyankian has no council assignments other than Health, which he quickly resigned due to a conflict of interest (not sure why). Daly should just return the EAC to Alyankian now while the issue's till hot. He would earn my respect if he admitted the mistake, returned the assignment and moved on.

For now, I'm judging for myself, and my judgement is that he's in it for partisan politics, not to make the borough a better place.

I've ben portrayed by your bloggers as partisan. Yes I admit that I'm a Democrat. I'm also not part of the pervasive culture in Delco of "to get ahead, go along" with the GOP party bosses. I think that the success of Media today is because we hire the best person we can find to fill a position (without regard to political affiliation), do the necessary planning for the future and follow through and implement our plans.

come on frank, come clean. media won an award from the governor's office, was the move really necessary?

Gil, Is right on for the most part but Alyanakian deserves full credit for all of Media's Green initiatives, however why does he have to take a shot. If Alyanakian was a Democrat he would not be calling his programs "feel good" Come on Gill, give him the credit he deserves.

Frank Daly is a wee little man with a wee little backbone flexing his wee little muscles in Media.

The accomplishments of alyanakian on environmental issues is staggering. The solar projects alone have cost the borough zero $$. Alyanakian was able to get grants totaling in excess of $300,000 to do the 5 buildings w/ solar panels. Gil down plays the moves as "feel good" projects w/ no real value but in fact the projects are educating students at the Media Elementary school to the benefits of solar energy and the projects reduce carbon emissions by over 10,000lbs per year.

As a democrat living in Media even I'm embarrassed by this partisan move. Maybe Daly should focus on whats wrong with our town like lack of capital money for major projects, preventing over development of Baltimore Pike and and raising taxes for the 3rd year in a row, instead of trying to take credit for whats working.
The move was pure partisan politics designed to give the democrats a platform when they run again.
Some people have no shame.

in a small town, if you have the right people in the right positions, you keep them in place and covet them. you let them continue their work and you enjoy the end result as the town prospers. alyanakian is the right person for the right position when it comes to the borough and their environmental committments. removing him is a travesty, and, in my honest opinion, a crime against all of us.

there are problems in the borough of media that need immediate attention and focus. the environment already had the correct focus and action. frank needs to address problems rather than create them.

I hope everyone sees what we could expect if the LibDonkeys like Frank Daly were ever to get a foothold in the courthouse door. Think we’d still hear them weeping about “minority party representation” then? Doubtful. Not with vicious partisans like Daly and Landau calling the shots.
But it ain’t just Daly and Media…
For all their weeping about the GOP “stranglehold” on Delco Council and the “need” for minority party representation during the last election, the Dems sure don’t seem to follow that script themselves. Their crocodile tears dried, they have set about power grabs and locking out Repubs from local municipalities governing bodies via reorganization across Delco. Just as the Dems on the national level, this must be the Delco Dems idea of bipartisan cooperation, unity and minority party representation. Underhanded, lying bastards.

Odd, isn't it that Daly talks about the GOP "Republican Party Bosses" like they are mobsters. Does he not know that there are big time DEMOCRATIC Party "bosses?" This isn't the "evil empire" (unless of course you count Daly). I think for any patriotic American, we need to continue to keep Daly in Media where he can do the least amount of harm to our country. I'm a Media Democrat, but thanks to Daly I keep it to myself.

Daly's democrats have really supported environmental issues since they were elected. Lets see their star councilman from Natural Lands Trust and the rest of the Daly Ds voted against an Anti-Idling law that would have reduce carbon emissions from idling vehicles. In essence they voted for more pollution. Great job keep up the good work! Oh and none of the current council were on council when alyankian started his solar program.
Daly is right the machine most go! Throw the Daly Dems out!

Small town politics is in a vicious circle of self destruction. Unfortunately you have to be a cut throat kind of person to even run for political office successfully. So cut throat styled people are attracted and even recruited to win elections, but then they don't realize that to be successful in office they have to turn that attribute off.

I have no issues with the democratic party, I don't really care about the political makeup of media borough's council as long as there are at least two parties involved. in fact, I was slammed on this blog last year when I suggested that we need both parties in county council in order to get things done and keep people honest(otherwise you have a one party dominant and dormant system like Philadelphia).

on such a local level, the environmental appointment should have had nothing to do with politics or a political strategy. the appointment should have involved an assessment of the existing representative and his/her performance before reappointing or making a change. based upon what alyanakian has done for media, I can't see where his performance has lacked; the borough's commitment to energy efficiency through solar panels has been a truly impressive undertaking that we should take pride in.

the worst part about all of this is that daly didn't have the courtesy to give alyanakian a call to discuss his thoughts. when they sit there at council meetings each month and say "We may have different opinions but we all get along and are friends," why should we believe this anymore?

if the tables were turned and a republican council president was to take recreation from monica simpson or zoning from peter williamson without notice or discussion in advance or even without a fair assessment I would be equally outraged. those two have experience in what they do aqnd should be valued in their positions as should alyanakian. daly needs to assign his liasons to their strengths. the environmental strength on that seven member council is clearly alyanakaian.

save the council news for shaking boyscouts hands and scheduling santa's annual arrival, not this petty nonsense!

Funny how Frank Daly hasn’t shown up here to defend himself and his action. That’s because he well knows it is indefensible. Knowing Daly’s level of partisanship, even after seeing this bipartisan condemnation of his petty power grab he is much more likely to dig in his partisan heels and stonewall rather than abide by his constituents’ clearly expressed desire. That is not ‘serving the community’ by any dishonest Lib stretch.

This guy’s gotta go. When does he come up for reelection again? Make sure folks don’t forget this when he comes knocking on doors, all smug smiles, asking for their support.

Pete is gone from the EAC for one particular reason and that is because he was getting too many accolades and too much recognition for his stellar work. I was at an annual meeting at the Media/UP Library where Joan Hagen was the speaker. She spoke of the two core organizations in any town --- the fire department and the library and how the Democrats had been in full support of both and how they would never fail either organization. She went on to give the Democrats full credit for all the improvements at both. I couldn't help but laugh, knowing full well that it has been Bill Tyson at the fire department and Pete at the library (both Republicans) that have made the difference. Too much credit was going to Pete and the Repubicans with the EAC and it was beginning to frustrate and shame Daly and his cohorts. Although I still believe in the fantasy of "It's a Wonderful Life" --- it is clear that in reality, Media could have been a "Bedford Falls" but thanks to Daly is becoming "Pottersville" and thus not everyone's hometown.

Daly - "Maybe you should form a committee with a big name to show you care about the subject."

Hall - "YEAH! That way, I'll have more creepy facetime with the TV Camera every month! Smiling to the public on TV shows that they're important to me, just as I read in my favorite book, 'Coulcil for Dummies!' "

Daly - "I dub your commission the 'LITTER TASK FORCE'. And, if you're a good boy, we'll turn it into the ENVIRONMENTAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE"

Hall - "What about Pete Alyanakian, that nasty Republican who disagrees with us so much?"

Daly - "Forget him, his opinions don't matter to me, I'm Frank Daly, bi%*h!"

it is really sad the county seat is represented by such a dysfunctional group of council people. The meetings have no energy, most members look confused, and all they do is read announcements to upcomming events. King Daly begs for email comments which he then ignores if he doesn't like the question. I can't tell you 1 significant piece of legislation this council has passed since they were elected 2 yrs ago. They have formed new committees like the street lighting committee, not sure what they do because there's never a report. They have the streetscape committe which ended 3 years ago, theres the parking and strategic finance committee and litter committee all designed to pass the buck on leading our town. The dems boasted they will have open and honest communication then turn around and do the opposite. The treasurer resigns and they appoint their failed candidate from this past election to the post without advertising the position. It has become so partisan that it is no wonder the meetings last for 3 hours. It is a disaster and will only get worse with moves like removing qualified people from the roles they are qualified for.
Good luck Media....you're going to need it with this crew.

The heartbreaker will be the February Council Meeting; if Daly doesn't wake up and realize the mistake he made, we'll be watching Brian Hall smiling to the camera and reporting on the EAC while knowing that the guy who grew the commission and made it what it is today will be sitting at the end of the table knowing he was the victim of a Frank Daly Screwjob.

Frank Daly lost the judgeship because he was not qualified for the position despite weak opposition. Frank lives for the limelight...anything to get his name or photo in the paper. Did you see last week's Daily Times photo of Frank leadng the MLK Walk down State Street? It is and has been the Daly Show for 20+ years and while the initial change may have been a good one, the residents have suffered for the better part of that time because Frank does not care about the residents, only himself...he ruined a perfectly good idea of the film fest when he made it a partisan political event. He quit council before when he sought a congressional seat and this past November he expected to use the council seat as a spring board to the Court House. The fact that he returned to council after the Hagen years is proof that his only concern was for the Democratic Party and his own political future. It is hightime the good residents of Media opened their eyes to what that have allowed to be created....petty, inept unconcerned government that thinks that costly street scapes, litter patrols and more hotels solve the problems of traffic, parking, high taxes, poor roads, crumblimg infrastructure, over development and loss of meaningful businesses such as a hardware store. Frank hates the County Government but where would Media be without that steady flow of income? Scary to consider; yet, instead or seeking a friendly working relationship with the County, he plays partisan hardball. Egotistical inanity is what it is!! Removing Pete from the EAC is just more of the same!!!

Right. That’s when he really lost a lot of people’s respect. For him to underhandedly introduce that viciously partisan and widely discredited lieumentary “F 911” to the “Local” Film Festival in the run-up to the 2004 presidential election was despicable. And then, once called on it, he smugly refused to pull it. That showed what the guy is really all about, as much as anything, just as his petty power grab here has.
Just doing his partisan part. The guy needs to go. Nice small towns like Media don’t need some jerk partisan LibDonkey interjecting such national level style dirty politics into every little thing. Partisan-in-everything-they-do jerks like Daly are responsible for the partisan divide today and can ruin a close-knit little town like Media.

Heck, he even made a mess of the Media 5 Miler, an event (like so many others) that he claims to have started. This past year's event was the WORST because he had to stick his nose in as to where the start/finish line would be. Clubs that know how to run such events and which helped in the past pulled away and hopefully the good citizens of Media will start doing the same and send Frank and his partisan cohorts packing. I am embarassed that this group has publicaly aired meetings as any homes that receive the transmission and are outside of Media must be scratching their heads wodering how did these folks ever get elected. Guess it is like the old saying that "anyone can grow up to be president (or a councilperson)" as that is precisely what has happened.

He served as mayor, quit to run for congress, served for 1 year as council pres., then decided to run and lose for judge. He cannot commit to anything but his own desire to be the next big cheese.
