The Un-Lovely Bones
My print column is up. It's about the legal wrangling over 14-year-old murder victim Danieal Kelly's "estate."
From the column:
"That's a funny name for it: Estate. After all, what property did Danieal Kelly, a victim of cerebral palsy, have to pass on to her loved ones? An old wheelchair? A few rags that passed for clothes? The maggot-infested bedsores she got living in her mother's home?
No, Danieal's estate consists of just one thing and one thing only: Suffering. And the estate's attorneys (not Danieal's attorneys, her estate's) are looking to turn that into cold, hard cash."
