Fit To Print

My print column on Hugh Mills, the Collingdale man busted on assorted weapons and assault charges, is up.

His version of events the night his home was invaded by sheriff's deputies and police is a lot different from the official version.

Yet, late in the day, yesterday, Mills "begged" us not to print it. We printed it, anyway. Mostly because we believe readers deserve the other side of the story.

If this hurts Mills' chances at a fair and quick resolution of the charges against him we may second guess that decision. But if that happens we'll also second guess the actions of law enforcement authorities and prosecutors in this case.

We report the facts as we get them and let the chips fall where they may.

UPDATE: This just in from a reader:

I am a democrat, centrist but left-leaning, so I don't always see eye to eye with you. When it comes to constitutional rights, there is almost no gray area. This man should not only not take a plea deal, he should sue for redress of grievances. Anything the police found after serving the wrong warrant, is inadmissible in court. So they are embarrassed, suck it up, you were wrong.
