A Modest First Step

[Posted by Jake]

Did you see where Obama wandered off the teleprompter script last week and revealed some of his true, redistributionist agenda? He boorishly pontificated, "I think at some point you have made enough money."

The mind reels at the possibilities. Salary caps for everybody? How about education, inheritances, work ethic, investments, innovation -- how should they be accounted for in Obama's brave new world? Does he include some of the great Democrat contributors and humanitarians like Soros, Buffett and Gates?

Permit me to suggest a modest first step. Benedict Arlen and Admiral Shipwreck both have massive campaign war chests. Neither will spend all of their funds, unless the rates for Michael J Fox and the little girl models have gone through the roof. One will lose the Primary and be able to enjoy his leftover campaign dollars as a lovely parting gift. Wanna bet whether one of them stands up, expresses solidarity with their President and says he won't take the money because "I think at some point you have made enough money."?

I can't say for sure, but I think donors to the respective candidates kind of thought the money would go to something like ... here's a wild idea, campaign costs? Since both dedicated public servants coincidentally happen to be millionaires, it's not like they really need to convert those funds to their own bank accounts. And how exactly does a career politician and a Navy admiral become millionaires? Is the public payroll that generous? With their enormous wealth, you'd think these two ingrates would be offering to serve in the Senate for free. After all, "at some point you have made enough money."

A modest first step would be to cap the personal net worth of all elected officials. Let's take away all the financial incentive to go into public service. Of course, unspent election funds would never revert to the candidate's personal checkbook. Instead, they would go back to the state treasuries where the election took place. That way, even the election losers could continue to help their loyal constituents. What do you think? Any chance of happening?
