Wag the Birth Control

Turning up the heat in the culture wars, The White House is attempting to distract voters from its own failure to improve the economy. Could work.

My print column is up.

Yes. We all know the Catholic Church owns the moral high ground.

Bob,
None of us "own" the moral high ground. Especially, U.S. presidents who are looking to get reelected.

What's that supposed to mean Mr. Smarty Pants? Oh wait! Tim Miller is Mr. Smarty Pants, isn't he?

I too have issues with the way some taxpayer money is pissed away on the arts. I also have a problem with my taxes paying to build sports complexes. Tim can demand money from the taxpayers until the cows come home, but the US Supreme Court disallows that demand. And rightfully so.

As for the Catholic Church, we see a long history of the repression of women and the repression of sexuality leading to a great degree of hypocrisy, and coverup's of the worst kind. Spare me the tears for the Catholic Church. We're no longer living in the 13th century. When the Catholic Church embraces birth control to lower the abortion rate, I'll start taking them seriously. But this is all about human sexuality isn't it? And sex is dirty. We prefer violence, thank you.

Bob,

The nice thing about the Catholic Church is that you can join it or leave it at your discretion.

Governments, on the other hand, impose their will on citizens as a matter of routine under threat of fines and jail time.

Some governments are more legitimate than others. But all use coercion and the threat of force to gain compliance.

That's why the government that governs least, governs best. That isn't the U.S. government in the last half of the 20th century and it certainly isn't the U.S. government in the early years of the 21st.

The federal government certainly has the high ground when it comes to lording over the rest of us. But there's nothing moral about it.

As for this being all about human sexuality, well that's certainly the Democratic talking point.

I see all this being about a big and growing government imposing its ideas of what's good on the rest of us.

Got it, Silly pants?

Gil - Conservatives have their own ideas as to what's good for us, and if they can find a way to impose their ideas on us, they will.

Bob,

How are catholics forcing their views on others? please explain. Is this like Obama forcing his views that capital injections to government programs actually benefit an economy?
